Most online retailers have two programs available for new vendors:
#1: Inventory is procured directly from vendor and shipped to the retailer distribution center. The retailer owns the merchandise, they will issue purchase orders on an “as needed” basis depending on sell-through rate.
#2: Inventory is ordered on a just-in-time basis, you are responsible for maintaining adequate inventory at your company warehouse. When a consumer orders the product online, the retailer will remit a purchase order and packing slip with instructions to ship within a specified window (typically 24-48hrs). Inventory may be purchased in as few as one unit per purchase order. This process is widely known as drop-shipping.
